After the treasure hunter

Works the few literate people, who accompanied the conquistadors in their trips only opened America, lay on the tables of historians only in the NINETEENTH century. With parchment pages of the past opened the horrific pictures of the destruction of ancient Indian cities and the enslavement and destruction of indigenous tribes and peoples of the continent…

Learned monks and Pedro Simon Pedro de Aguado, the poet and chronicler Juan de Castellanos, the chronicler Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo-and-Wildes told the descendants of many details of the hike and the wonders of open lands, including the “elaborately decorated and crowded cities of Pozegaca, Become, Hironaka and bond”, located on the North of South America – about where nowadays the border between Colombia and Venezuela.

Two dozen expeditions in the twentieth century returned from the slopes of the mountain massif the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta without any results – only the jungle Yes small villages of Kogi Indians, have preserved no memory of its glorious past. In the seventies of the twentieth century seriously began to prove that the evidence of documents is not supported by the findings – no more than a myth… Believed the same three hundred years ago in the country of El Dorado, a real man of gold, who reigned somewhere in the upper reaches of the Orinoco! Also once inhabited the imagination of the Guiana coast people wearing head under my arm!

Fortune smiled, as it predkamye, “layperson”. This area of Santa Marta has long been in good standing with antiquarians and treasure hunters – the gold statuette washes out the rising spring water from the slopes of river terraces, ancient clay pot with intricate ornament… And suddenly, in impenetrable thickets on the slopes of the Sierra, facing the Caribbean sea, one of the collectors of antiquities stumbled on a stone staircase. Behind it was another, far more pretentious, ornate, and more – more…

Excavations began in the same year, and before the scientific community, and then before the audience appeared the ruins have been cleared from the jungle of the city where once lived – hard to believe! – more than one million people.

The ancient Tayrona – the one mentioned in the Chronicles of Hironaka – was a not one continuous city, but a conglomerate of two to three hundred large villages. They were lying closely adjacent to each other, like folds of a fan, at a height of 900 to 1200 meters above sea level. Here and there beside the stone platforms covered waterfalls; carefully constructed retaining walls prevent soil erosion, landslides and rockfalls; the steep streets clearly repeat all the curves of the mountain slopes, on which there are artificial drainage channels…

Of course, stone building Machu Picchu – “the secret city of the Incas” discovered in Peru in the middle of the last century, are beyond the scope of Tyrany. However, the expressiveness of the construction of culture and that all of a sudden, the respect with which tyranny attitude to the environment, they are far ahead of the neighbors. Ancient cities of the Incas were first and foremost fortifications, fortifications, and the construction of nature didn’t spare. Residents of Tyrone, apparently, preferred not so “Imperial” lifestyle, trying to get along with the mountains, forests and waters, not to “conquer” them.

Carefully aligned terraces, surrounding slopes, were bamboo and wooden huts on stone foundations, roofed with palm leaves. Near each house was fenced plot, where they grow mainly corn. Excavations gave an idea about the division of labour, peculiar to citizens: lived on the upper slopes of the Indians were engaged in farming and weaving, below – stairs and along the roads leading to the sea – settled salivary, fishermen, gatherers of shellfish. Barter was facilitated by Western-backed in excellent condition roads and trails that connected all the “neighborhoods” Tyrone.

Today before coming to the national Park of Santa Marta appear only several square kilometers of ruins, completely cleared from the jungle. This is nothing more than the tenth part of a huge Tyrone to see it fully can so far only from the air. As the settlements of the descendants of those who once built and inhabited by…

Ethnographers and anthropologists have compared the data obtained during the excavation with information about the current tribes that inhabit the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, came to the conclusion that tarantsev are descendants of the ancient tribes of Kogi and Aravaca. Will not be superfluous to recall that in 1908 the French count Joseph de Brett, having read the Spanish Chronicles and went to the place of their operation, not found of ancient cities, but published on his return to Paris a book on the manners and customs of the Kogi Indian tribe. However, writing an enthusiastic Amateur trying to see the inhabitants of the jungle of an ancient high civilization, specialists are not taken seriously then. Now archaeologists use this work in the reconstruction of some aspects of the everyday life of ancient tayronas.

…And life that was brutally broken in 1599, when the Indians, not wanting to put up with increasing oppression from aliens, rose. “Hanging gardens” Tyrone was enveloped in the smoke of fires, the stone cascades of channels, the steps of the stair-streets flowed the blood. Even seasoned chronicler Juan de Castellanos with disapproval tells the story of how the captain of the conquistadors, the Quill ordered to cut off noses, lips and ears of all the captives, men. The surviving Spaniards were driven from their native mountainous terraces in the valley, where many found death by starvation.

The town was abandoned by the invaders as useless, and came to us like a treasure which is buried the ancestors of those living today, but are unable to come back to take advantage of them…
