On Earth, almost no white spots. But almost every year we read about sensational finds made by archaeologists. About the most mysterious of them, secrets which are yet to be disclosed, says a new German book.
Much in the book “Things that could not be” perceived ambiguously. Already Chapter titles: “Shot Neanderthal”, “Antique computer”, “Ancient aliens” and so forth, cause distrust. But quite bold in some of his conclusions, the author Reinhard Habeck (Habeck Reinhard), as a rule, adheres strictly to the facts. For example, he very carefully describes was found in the early twentieth century on the seabed close to the small Greek island of Antikythera a subject that many (and not only Habeck) called “ancient computer”.
Fragments of “ancient computer”
An astrolabe from the bottom of the sea
Model, exhibited in the German Museum in Munich, shows that it is a very complex mechanism consisting of multiple gears of different sizes linked together in different planes. Most “computer” is reminiscent of a modern astrolabe. It allows you to keep track of the solar and lunar calendars to calculate the trajectory of planets and to determine the position of the stars. This is not surprising today, but “the mechanism of Antikythera” was assembled in periodid 150-m and 100-m years BC! Continue reading
Found two ancient settlements, Dating back at least 800 years. Discover the ancient settlement managed during the construction of the second ring road. Archaeologists have finished the excavation. What is the value of the monuments, what would happen to them and what Antiques are of most interest — this “MP” told the researcher of the Department of archaeology of primitive society at the Institute of history of NAS of Belarus Zoya Kharitonovich.
Find the objects — a great success. In fact, ancient settlements, as a rule, not marked on the ground. These were typical of arable fields that have long been used for economic needs. Therefore, to detect the settlement — not an easy task — says Zoya Kharitonovich. — It’s either luck or purposeful exploration. Archaeologists frequently go on expeditions, exploring the area that they are interested in writing this or that work, and as a result find something unique. Sometimes random findings bring to school museums children: they can show the place, where they found these artifacts, and this new point on the map. This time the researchers got lucky. Drawings of long-forgotten processors, initial codes of programs or games legendary, unknown works of art – all these rarities today quickly become costly Antiques. So, like any other Antiques, it is possible to earn.
We live in an age where information is practically unable to get lost – as once digitized, the data will always remain in electronic form. But the standards and formats change, storage media have a limited life or simply become obsolete. Together with them “obsolete” and sent to the shelves of the pearl of great data.
“Digital archaeologists” in the world so far, the unit, and as complicated as that of the seekers of antiquities. Only one ton of earth dug up, and others shuffling a lot of data. If someone bought at auction an ancient Apple I computer and digital artifacts is the demand.
What is lost in the vast Network; for example, the drawing processor MOS 6502 in the mid – 80s of the twentieth century he was the most popular processor in the world due to the low prices and incredibly high for the time of performance. At the time of its appearance, it was worth $25 — this is 4-5 times cheaper than competitors like the Intel 8080 and Motorola 6800. All, I mean who saw the movie “the Terminator”, will remember one of the first scenes: with a view “from eyes” of a cyborg. Running there lines of code is the MOS 6502 assembler. After the release of the processor from use of his drawings disappeared, since the MOS 6502 was created by a pencil on Whatman paper. Continue reading
